Rockstar releases fixes and workarounds for some GTA V PC problems

Are you one of the players that have waited with baited breath for the PC release of GTA V only to discover issues that make the game launch painful? In the wake of problems and errors in the release of GTA V, Rockstar has provided players with workarounds and fixes for some of the common issues.  Let’s break it down:

Error while trying to transfer your character from PS3 or Xbox 360?

If it’s been awhile and I’m talking like since 2013 that you’ve logged onto your character and the data transfer didn’t port your vehicle over then you will need to log onto your console and follow these instructions from Rockstar.

Game hanging up while downloading the update?

Your username could be the culprit. As explained by Rockstar, Windows account users names that include characters not on their released list of supported characters will need to either wait for a fix or create an Administrator User Account.

Unable to detect Windows Media Player?

If you don’t have the player downloaded on your PC you will need to install it then retry the installation per Rockstars instructions:

  1. Open the Control Panel
  2. Click "Programs"
  3. Click "Turn Windows Features On or Off"
  4. In the resulting popup, make sure "Windows Media Player" is checked under the "Media Features" folder
  5. Click "OK" and wait for Windows Media Player to install

Rockstar Social Club launcher errors?

Wanting to be social but failing horribly in GTA V due to the following errors:

  • "Social Club failed to initialize."
  • "Social Club failed to load due to an incomplete installation. Please exit the game and re-install the latest version of the Social Club."
  • "A newer version of Social Club is required. The updater may have failed. Please exit the game and install the latest version of the Social Club."

Rockstar recommends uninstalling Social Club then reinstalling it manually from here. If that doesn’t fix the issue they offer additional troubleshooting:

Verify the Steam Cache (Steam version only):

  1. Load Steam.
  2. From the Library section, right-click on the game and select Properties from the menu.
  3. Select the Local files tab and click the Verify integrity of game cache... button.
  4. Steam will verify the game's files - this process may take several minutes.

 Run GTAV as Admin

  1. Go to the install directory for GTAV PC
  2. Right click "PlayGTAV.exe"
  3. Click "Run as Administrator"

  • Verify that you have the latest version of DirectX and Visual C++. The latest versions can be downloaded from here.
  • If you are stuck loading, auto-signin may have failed. Press the Home key and see if you can log in manually.
  • Temporarily disable antivirus/security, then uninstall if disabling does not work as a test. Be sure to reinstall and re-enable your antivirus after the test.
  • Make sure that Social Club is installed to the correct directory (by default, this is: Program FilesRockstar GamesSocial Club)
