Daft Punk- Random Access Memories

Electronic music pioneers Daft Punk have a new album coming out- and if you haven't heard it yet, you're missing out. You can catch it streaming live on GrooveShark and iTunes, four days before its release and it's definitely worth giving it a listen.

The first thing that strikes you is how utterly unpretentious it is. Jason Lipschulz, in his track-by-track review on Billboard, put it far better than I ever could:

"There's a point on "Doin' It Right," the penultimate track on Daft Punk's "Random Access Memories," where the album's utter lack of post-modern ambitions smacks the listener in the face."

The disco influence just pours off it like sweat from the brow of a guy wearing a polyester leisure suit, circa 1976- but for some reason, it doesn't chafe. Somehow, the eclectic French duo have managed to concot a mixture of 70's vibe and 21st century sensibility that, while not always perfect, never truly gets irritating.

Quite a few of the tracks are a radical departure from previous work by Daft Punk, in tempo and style, so I expect there will be a raised eyebrow or two.

But I also expect that this will be the album you'll hear the most of for at least the summer.

Cyclometh's rating: 4 out of 5. Random Access Memories releases by May 21. You can pre-order it on iTunes or listen to it on iTunes, Grooveshark and possibly other streaming services.
