Social Quake

So what happens when you combine the wonders of social networking (think facebook), with the fun and joy of the massive fragfest that's called Quake?
Short answer: http://www.quakelive.com
Long answer: A port of the gazillion times favoured Quake III arena into a browser plugin. Essentially you play Quake through your browser, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. Quake Live launched yesterday and already there are tens of thousands of players waiting in queue to download the plugin.
What is neat and interesting about Quake Live is that you can play wherever you are. Home, work, a friend's house. All you need is a browser. All of your preferences and settings are stored remotely so you never have to worry about your config file and game updates.
Additionally your skills get automatically evaluated and for each games there are indications as to the level of players and how they compare to you.
Of course on the social side, there are all the good things and stats you would expect from socially networked game. You can find and add friends, you can track your friends activity, join the game they're on, compare your stats to them, see achievements and awards, form clans, chat with them and all that sort of goodness.
Quake is back, and it's all over! Expect to find us SIRadio DJ's there.
