This morning from the Penny Arcade Expo, Turbine unveiled The Lord of the Rings Online: Siege of Mirkwood, a new digital expansion to their MMO, launching this fall. It will further expand the world of Middle-earth in the game, letting players venture further eastward into the forests of Mirkwood and take part in the conclusion to Volume II of The Lord of the Rings Online.
Siege of Mirkwood will be available as a digital download this Fall with an increased level cap to level 65, a new region including the legendary evil fortress of Dol Goldur, major enhancements to combat, Legendary Items, and the introduction of Skirmishes, a new system where players will train customizable soldiers and take them into battle as part of the War of the Ring.
Under the command of Celeborn and Galadriel, players will fight through vast armies of Orcs alongside the Elves of Lórien in a battle that will take them to Dol Guldur, the fortress of the Ringwraiths. This update includes Book 9 and the Epilogue to the sweeping epic tale begun with the award-winning Mines of Moria expansion.
Skirmishes offer a new system of repeatable, randomized instances where players can create and lead customized soliders into battle, training them to greater skill as they earn victories against the forces of shadow. You can also answer the call to battle wherever violence erupts with the new "World Join" function that lets players and their fellowships band together to fight in various locations throughout Middle-earth.
Dol Doldur, the fortress of the Ringwraiths, will have new 3 and 6 player instances as well as a new 12 player raid where you will face off against a Nazgul Lord.
The combat system continues to see improvements with improved responsiveness when in the heat of battle. The legendary item system will improve with players being able to create their own customized Second and Third Age legendary items from raw materials and increase their levels to 60. You can also get new Legacies, new titles, and a fourth Runic slot to make Legendary items more unique and powerful.
More details will follow from PAX, so stay tuned!

Gone are the days of yore where you would toil away wasting hours upon hours and every quarter you were supposed to spend on lunch in the local arcade. Back then, gameplay was a simple romp through level after level with your favorite characters to jaunt up to a boss whose health you could only discern by the colors and speed of which he flashed. Those days seem to have all but been forgotten, yet seem to live on with a certain nostalgia through flash games. This brings me to this week's Workless Wednesday Review of Dadgame.
The game is a continuation of 2004's wildly funny and infamous flash cartoon short Dad's Home and its' 2007 counterpart Dad's At Work. Dadgame and the accompanying animatons are all works by newground user Sakupen, who although does not sport a large collection of work, does however make sure his work is quality with a few awards under his belt. The phrase "quality over quantity" comes to mind, which impresses me as most flash artists are more interested in continuing their series than making sure their work is quality.
Dadgame starts out with Dad, whom you play as, at work and barging in on his boss to destroy his office in a highly comical manner to steal his dastardly plans for world domination! Did I mention you launch yourself away from a ninja and go flying from a window? So what else is an evil crime syndicate boss to do when his plans are stolen? Call the police he bought off of course! Hilarity ensues!

Comics are big business, very big business, with the recently released and quite frankly awesome Batman Arkham Asylum, the upcoming DC Universe Online and Champions Online MMOs, as well as the Watchmen and Wolverine movies as well as countless others. It's always been quite the entertainment industry for a good many years. Now it's all set to get a lot more exciting for the Marvel universe as The Walt Disney Company have agreed to buy Marvel and its' huge array of over 5000 characters for a cool $4 billion.
What this will mean for the future of Marvel video game titles from Activision, Sega, and the upcoming Marvel MMO is unsure as Disney are certainly no strangers to the world of video games.
The deal looks pretty sweet for Marvel shareholders who, under the terms of the sale agreement agreement will receive $30 per share for their Marvel stock, plus .745 of a share of Disney stock for each share they own, which equates in real terms as potentially free money.
Robert A. Iger, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company said about the sale that, "This transaction combines Marvel's strong global brand and world-renowned library of characters including Iron Man, Spider-Man, X-Men, Captain America, Fantastic Four and Thor with Disney's creative skills, unparalleled global portfolio of entertainment properties, and a business structure that maximizes the value of creative properties across multiple platforms and territories." He also went on to say that, "Ike Perlmutter and his team have done an impressive job of nurturing these properties and have created significant value. We are pleased to bring this talent and these great assets to Disney."
Marvel have also issued a press release through their Chief Executive Officer Ike Perlmutter stating their side of the story, saying that, "Disney is the perfect home for Marvel's fantastic library of characters given its proven ability to expand content creation and licensing businesses." Also added to this was: "This is an unparalleled opportunity for Marvel to build upon its vibrant brand and character properties by accessing Disney's tremendous global organization and infrastructure around the world."
Nothing has actually been said about the upcoming games but I'm sure Sega, Activison and Gazillion will all be throwing out their thoughts and opinions in the near future.
As a sidenote, I can't help but wonder if this means Wolverine will now get a singing bear as a sidekick or if Spiderman will join a voyage home with two puppies and a "hilarious" wisecracking octopus with Eddie Murphy's voice or even if Doctor Doom will befriend a kitten called Charlie who will teach him how to love again, but only time will tell.
