AMD & ATI To Merge
Two of the biggest names in computer hardware have today announced one of the biggest merger deals in computing. In a move which could affect thousands of people and see the two brands become one of the most dominant hardware powers around, graphics giant ATi are to be merging with processor specialists AMD.

On July 24, 2006, AMD and ATI announced a plan to join forces, in a transaction that will combine AMD’s technology leadership in microprocessors with ATI’s strengths in graphics, chipsets and consumer electronics. The result is a processing powerhouse: a new competitor, better equipped to drive growth, innovation and choice for its customers in commercial and mobile computing segments and in rapidly-growing consumer electronics segments. The transaction, valued at US $5.4 billion, is expected to close in Q4 2006 subject to approval by ATI shareholders, court approval, regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions.

This news, combined with the recent news of Intel dropping Crossfire support for their motherboards could possibly see your processor choice also dictating your graphics card choice, and many are worried about the merger reducing the amount of choice system builders will have.

What long term impact this will have on the computer hardware market is yet to be seen, but one fthing is for sure, the impact of this deal is probably going to have many reprecussions to come...
