Dead Island To Get The Hollywood Treatment

This years big zombie action game Dead Island really is becoming a true multimedia experience, the game by Deep Silver has been hugely successful and even has a book of the game from the outset, but now Lionsgate Pictures have announced that Dead Island The Movie is a reality and is in early planning stages.

First and foremost, do not panic! Seriously, don't! I've checked and checked again, I've read up a little further on this and I can happily annonce that Ewe Bolle has nothing to do with this film. And now that's out of the way, I can begin.

Dead Island, as many of us have played or seen is an open world game set in the holiday resort of Banoi and was subject to a hugely popular and succesful viral campaign with it's impressive trailer that left reviewers, gamers and well, pretty much the entire internet slack jawed and excited, myself included. The trailer told the story of a family trapped on the island at the holiday resort, besieged by the infected and skyrocketted to popularity with over 1,000,000 hits on it's first day. It was hailed by many as "the best trailer ever" and in one case "the best anything trailer.

It was so popular in fact that it even won the Golden Lion at the Cannes International Festival of Creativity, which is widely regarded as the advertising industry's top honour and was even featured by Adweek on their World's Best Commercials annual list.

The announcement of the movie, made by Lionsgate COO Joe Drake was accompanied by comments saying  “Like the hundreds of journalists and millions of fans who were so passionate and vocal about the Dead Island trailer, we too were awestruck.”  He continued, “This is exactly the type of property we’re looking to adapt at Lionsgate – it’s sophisticated, edgy, and a true elevation of a genre that we know and love.  It also has built in brand recognition around the world, and franchise potential.”

The movie, Dead Island is still a way off and is currently in the early development stage with producers already attatched to the title.  Sean Daniel (The Mummy, Dazed and Confused) will take charge of production through his Sean Daniel Company alongside widely respected post production expert Stefan Sonnenfeld, who has worked with big name directors including J.J Abrams, Michael Bay and Gore Verbinski.  Jason Brown of The Sean Daniel Company and Missy Papageorge for Sonnenfeld’s Sunny Field Productions are named as executive producers with Sarah Perlman of Sunny Field Productions as the movie's co-producer.

Nothing has been released yet as to who will star in the movie or which character or characters it will follow, but it's looking like a video game movie with promise. It comes as no huge surprise that this particular game would recieve the Hollywood treatment, after all with cult book World War Z and a whole host of zombie related movies over the last couple of years it just seems perfectly reasonable that this particular game would head that way too.
