Here it is ladies and gentlemen; Bungie has finally unveiled its new IP ‘Destiny’ in the first of what will become a running series of ViDoc’s covering the games details and development. So, what do we know right now? Read the full story to find out...
For those of you out of the loop, ‘Destiny’ is the latest IP to come from Bungie studios, creators of the ever popular Halo series. In a joint effort with Activision, Bungie hopes to build on the success of their last game world, and produce something that builds on what they’ve done in the past. Enter ‘Destiny’. Now I’ll pause for a second, whilst you get a good look at what they’ve put on show in the video below.
Now, wasn’t that awesome? I sure think so! But what have we learnt from the video you ask? Quite a lot, even if it is just more speculation.
The world is set in the future, and takes place after some sort of great collapse of civilisation. There are numerous references via the images and mentions of hostile forces to suggest that the setting of the game was inhabited by the residents of the last great city, but something happened to cause mass destruction. Further into the video, we are shown an enormous structure towering over the planet, with the narrator referencing a character called ‘the traveller’, someone who sacrificed their life to protect the planets inhabitants. It’s clear the traveller is a person of importance, since the name crops up multiple times through the narration, along with information about the characters that you will actually play as. It appears you start as a ‘guardian’ of the city, who has inherited some of the traveller’s powers, leaving you more capable of protecting the city you now call home.
Throughout the video, we are shown multiple concept art stills of the war torn planet, along with possible hostile alien factions and even some gameplay footage near the end, showing off a blue swirly thing (I think it might be a portal/wormhole/star-gate/whatever). The visuals are reminiscent of Halos vibrant yet polished metal surfaces and landscapes, which will come as no surprise, but it seems that Bungie are once again on form in delivering great visuals to accompany gameplay.
The last item of note is the appearance of an extended play experience, with the start of the video littered with example of Smartphone’s being used to interact with the game world, suggesting there will be a heavy social aspect included with the game. As you can see from the screen cap on the right, taken from the video, there’s a character info screen, showing something similar to WoW’s armoury app, with slots for equipment or gear alongside the character.
Exciting stuff, and something I will be keeping a close eye on in the months to come. What do you think about the new game world? How do you think the social aspects will tie in with the game? Are you exited?! Tell us in the box below!
