Well...did you see it? No?! Well worry not my absent friend, as i've got you covered. That’s right, lying in wait for your light holes (...your eyes, pervert) is the first of my ‘No-Nonsense’ guide to what just happened in E3. No PR B******t, no promises of perfection or bliss because you bought a giant box and most defiantly none of that talk about TV. It’s the E3 2013 Microsoft roundup folks and you don’t want to miss it...
Without wasting any time, Microsoft jumps straight into the first gameplay footage of Kojima-san’s next Metal Gear Solid game - MGS5 Phantom Pain – Footage of which is underneath. The game is set in an open world environment, a first for the series, with plenty of new and old features being thrown into the cooking pot. This is definitely one to watch. Trailer found here.
After successfully wetting everyone’s appetite for information, the focus shifts onto the current gen solutions, with Microsoft announcing a new model for the Xbox 360 – bringing it ‘in-line with the design of the Xbox One’ – along with the announcement that XBL gold subscribers will begin to receive 2 full games a month for free, to compete with Sony’s PS Plus service.
World of Tanks, the popular F2P tank-driving-shooting-blaster simulator will also be getting Xbox 360 support, allowing Xbox players to join in the fun you can only get from destroying everything in sight comfily inside your metal box. Announcement trailer here.
Some of the last titles that will probably be release for the Xbox 360 now, a new IP titled Max: The Curse of Brotherhood is a side-scrolling platformer oozing with charm. Parallel to that is the sadistic action RPG sequel - Dark Souls 2 – showcasing a montage of game footage alongside a spiffy soundtrack. Now supporting the current console is all well and good, but we are here for the shining new beacons to drool after so here’s a rundown of what games came to Microsoft’s E3 conference.
Ryse - After wrapping up the 'legacy' info for their current console, Microsoft begins to focus on the next generation releases. First to hit the scene is Ryse, an action title set in a Romanesque time period........with what seems like a billion Quick Time Events thrown in.
Killer Instinct – A reboot to the old skool N64/Arcade versions, Rare are bringing this 2D fighter back to consoles with a fresh lick of paint. Not much else is discussed in the demo as it’s also used to showcase some smart glass/twitch integration features.
Sunset Overdrive – Coming from nowhere, formerly Playstation exclusive developers announce a multiplayer shooter-something game with a slight cartoony graphical appearance (from the CG shown anyways) no gameplay here, but could be cool.
Forza Motorsport 5 – E3 was littered with driving games like an overcrowded car park, but Forza seemed to be one of the few that tried to add something new. Their new system for replacing the AI with saved gameplay data stored in the cloud is a neat idea if nothing else.
Minecraft – If you haven’t played Minecraft by now, it’s unlikely you’ll be getting this. But nevertheless it’s good to know everyone’s favourite block stacking sim will be getting its share in a next gen console.
Quantum Break – This feels like Microsoft’s answer to the Playstation’s cinematic style story games like heavy rain and Beyond, but regardless of why it was made it still have some interesting concepts that I look forward to seeing fleshed out. Again no gameplay here, but I’ll take what I can get.
D4 - A new IP from Hidetaka Suehiro, director of deadly premonition, this is an episodic murder mystery game and will no doubt be confusing in every possible way considering its creator.
Project Spark – One of the more original titles shown off, Project Spark is marketing itself as a sandbox style toolkit in which players can make their own scenarios for gameplay, changing the world and various parameters on the fly.
Quick break! Out comes the Microsoft PR guy to talk about what kind of features they will be implementing for the Xbox One. First up, as mentioned earlier, Twitch.tv is getting integrated into the Xbox shell, allowing you to stream whilst you play. No information on how this will work, if it will incur an extra charge or what restrictions (if any) are placed on this service. Another announcement comes down here as Microsoft reveals they are dropping their MS point’s scheme for real currency on XBL purchases. We knew this before the conference, but it’s nice to get confirmation. Back to the games!
Dead rising 3 – Supposedly exclusive to the Xbox One, Dead rising 3 gets a healthy dose of footage here (in game too) showing off a more impressive but also more serious tone to the games zombie slaying narrative. Fans of the older game might not be as interested if you can’t sport a bikini whilst draping the zombie denizens in Servbot helmets.
The Witcher 3 – The next instalment to the series, The Witcher 3 will carry on the story of Geralt with promises of a bigger game world (100 hours apparently) and a better facelift to the graphics. It’s looking good.
Battlefield 4 – It’s an FPS...in sea of FPS games with little to distinguish it other than....well the number 4 I guess. Nothing truly new here, some gameplay footage of a boat but that’s about it. Nice to see they are trying to innovate, right? Also, what you don’t see here is a technical hiccup leading to a once peppy speaker from EA becoming rather unhappy with what happened, closing the scene with a rather depressed disposition...Ouch, that’s got to sting a bit.
Halo 5 (Maybe) – Master Chief has found his way into the desert, only to be attacked by something out of shadow of the colossus. I’ve titled this Halo 5, but since there was barely any information given here, it could just as easily been their Halo TV/Movie tie in they announced earlier in the year.
Crimson Dragon – Successor to the age old Panzer Dragoon series, this reboot hopes to bring the IP into the next generation. The live announcement was somewhat cringe-worthy with the audio not working during any of it, however they continued on without throwing a hissy fit (Take notes EA) so for their good sportsmanship, here’s a link to their full trailer with sound.
Titanfall – Respawn Entertainment’s first release since their creation, this is shaping up to be a Battlefield style FPS title with mech suits and jetpacks. It’s possible we may find something new here, but I won’t be taking this off the overcrowded E3 FPS shelf just yet.
And finally, to tie off their conference Microsoft decides to let everyone know when the Xbox One will be available and at what price. Launching November 2013, the Next iteration of the Xbox console will be priced at £429 in the UK and $/€499 In the US and the rest of Europe.
Stay tuned, theres a s**t ton more content to come.
