E3 Preview: Bethesda shows off new horror game “The Evil Within”

title

E3 is fast approaching, so you can bet your bottom dollar there’s going to be a ton of information coming at you from every angle. Not one to shy away, Bethesda has ensured they get their feet firmly stuck in the door by showcasing a new title, to be published in the arms of Bethesda Studios, under the pedigree craftsmanship of Shinji Mikami – creator of the good Resident Evil games (the last one being RE4.) Read on....if you dare.

Bethesda recently showed off “The Evil Within” at an exclusive press screening, an account of which can be found over at Kotaku. 20 minutes of footage was shown to those present, followed by a short Q&A session with Shinji answering the audience’s questions on what they had just been shown. It seems that Shinji’s vision on this new game is to keep it scary, but make it unique in its own right so much as to distance itself from its Resident Evil predecessors.

"One of the things from the demo is the mine trap," Kimura says. "There will be a lot of traps that makes the combat more strategic. That's one of those things.”

As more of the gameplay is revealed, it would appear a great deal of focus has been placed on making more than just the enemies a hazard to the player, with a huge focus on traps and environmental dangers ready to cleave you in twain.

Frankly, there’s been a huge shortfall of horror games that lived up to their genre label recently, and considering Shinji Mikami’s background, there’s definitely potential in this game to put the scare back into horror games.
