The game that pretty much came up at the end of 2012 and beat it to within an inch of it's life!
Far Cry 3 is possibly one of the best games that has come out EVER apart from a few small things, all will be discussed in the coming page. There are spoilers but I will try not to give too much away. No promises though! But read on, click the review and feel free to comment and tell all.
The game itself is set in modern times with a bunch of people around your character’s age. Things are pretty awesome until you are captured by pirates. Now, I will say this to begin with, DAMN THIS CHARACTER IS AMAZING! I love the villain from the word go, he is incredibly mental and he has so much depth to him that I just want to keep re-watching the intro clip again and again.
The tutorial is very well done as it isn’t a case of “Do this, very good” more a case of “Oh damn, duck!”. I often have a little niggle that tutorials are there for the stupid, but they do come in nicely and the game gets you hooked in the perfect way.
As things progress through you get the idea of the game. You are on an island that is pretty much run by pirates, a small tribe of people have found a freedom in being rebels and are trying to get the island back using an ancient art called “Kicking ass!” The sum of it is you have ‘magical’ tattooes, and I use the term magical very lightly as the fact that it just grows a little each time you level up and learn new skills that are pretty awesome.
The game reminds me of a combination of DeadIsland and Black Ops with a hint of Witcher thrown in. Now, why do I think this? The Levelling system is similar to any generic game but the seriousness of the characters is very good. Black Ops because of the run and gun style at points though I will say this STRAIGHT away the stealth system is freakin ace! And Witcher because you get to gather basic herbs and make potions to make things easier!
The graphics on this game are pretty damn awesome, the gameplay is fantastic and the music is pretty damn special – A bit of wub wub and classical so you have some nice combinations there. As the game progresses through you really get to see a lot of things going on, the develop of the main character is pretty well done.
HOWEVER and this is a big however there is one thing that I –really- disliked about the game and that was the ending.
After spending all that time, saving your friends, defeating a drug lord and one seriously messed up pirate you truly feel like you are a part of the story. It comes to a point where you are brought to this bit the “Save your friends” or “Kill your friends”.
Whilst this sounds like a good plot twist, and I will agree I love the drama and the build up the ending is pathetic. We literally have a choice of these two options and once you’ve done the choice there is a 2minute cut scene and its ended… Whoop-te-do!
I really did hate it, why? If you join with the nut job you actually get a 2 minute clip of shaggin the girl and then you die. Yeah I know I promised no spoilers but deal with it. Or the other option is to save your friends, the nut job dies and then you get on a boat… No interaction, no development, it felt like the writers just went “Right, I’m bored now, let us end it here”… Drove me nuts!
All in all though, a part from that ending I truly would give this game much more love but because of the bitter sweet ending I give this game a 7/10… Yes the 3 go because of the ending, it fecked me off that much.
