A new and quite frankly revolutionary initiative between MTV Games and Harmonix is about to set the world alight and make the Rockband franchise even more exciting than ever. Not content with a million and one song packs and the upcoming Beatles game, there will be a whole new addition to the already hit game that will set it apart from it's Guitar Hero rival.

Guitar Hero, as we all know has a studio on there where you can make your own tracks, and as Youtube recently showed us one talented individual has already used that to create Guitar Hero Megadeth by using the Aerosmith game. But Rockband is set to go one better with the Rockband Network.
The Rock Band Network which is currently in closed beta, should launch to the public in August and will let musicians and bands upload their own music for use and purchase in the Rockband game. Now this will not only let bands get that little bit of extra coverage and their music showcased for the world but will also do it in what could quite possibly be the next huge musical revolution. Yeah, that might sound a bit strong, but as a musician who has worked on more musical projects than I've had hot dinners this is “jizz in my pants” exciting news. It gets better than this as musicians who sell any of their music via this medium will get paid. Yes, it's been promised that musicians who upload their tunes and sell them here will receive a 30% stake of the price. Songs will be able to retail at anything between 50c and $3 (US). This is a service open to both signed and unsigned artists so you never know where this might lead, Rockband exclusive mixes by established artists? Could be nice The next Beatles waiting to happen getting discovered on there? Could be nicer, especially if it's me.
It's also been revealed how this will work, songs will be uploaded to the Rockband Network and subject to review and made compatible with the game by Harmonix's developers and then placed on an XBOX Live based dedicated store for the world to enjoy. I'm assuming that this could be an XBOX exclusive as there is no word about the service going to PSN or Wii, but don't quote me on that exclusivity.
At the minute I can't help but think of this as being iTunes for Rockband like I said this potentially could be the most exciting and interesting thing to happen in music for a long time. If applied well the potential is immense and could in theory make an already seemingly infinite game more than just seemingly infinite.
