Because of recent publicity over Activision's Guitar Hero 5, some might say that Courtney Love is a very strange person indeed, some might say a lot worse, but in the interests of diplomacy I think I'll stick with strange. We all know the story by now, Courtney Love didn't like the fact her late husband Kurt Cobain can be used in the game to sing other people's songs, had the backing of other members of Nirvana, including Dave Grohl and then turned on him via Twitter messages with some very unpleasant threats made towards his posterior.
But it seems that the unthinkable has happened and that she has found herself an ally in her fight against the game. Yes, in a pun inducing move Jon Bon Jovi of all people has stepped up and not only given Love a good name (see what I did there?) but has backed her up by saying that he was also approached with the offer of being an avatar in the game and also announced that he declined the offer.
The floppy haired singer spoke to the BBC about it and said this about being an avatar in the game.
"I don't know that I would have wanted it either. To hear someone else's voice coming out of a cartoon version of me? I don't know. It sounds a little forced."
He also added that, “no-one even broached the subject with me that I would be singing other people's stuff. I don't know how I would have reacted to that. I don't know that I would have wanted it either."
For the editorial bit with my personal opinion check after the break.
Now, my opinion on this is that certain people in the music industry need to shut up and have a reality check. For a few reasons.
First, these games sell millions of copies worldwide, to people of all ages and showcase band's music to potentially new audiences potentially adding to record/mp3 sales. For most musicians this would be a good thing.
Second, these kind of games are in effect an extention of karaoke for the home, you can sing and play guitar to your hearts content for fun. And as anyone who has ever been to a pub knows, karaoke is very popular and very lucrative too.
Third, and this one is particularly directed at Courtney Love's argument. Bands do covers. From little bands like mine all the way through to giants like Metallica, always have done, always will do. One of those bands were, Nirvana, who famously covered David Bowie's The Man Who Sold the World as well as others, so really isn't it just a little hypocritical to make this complaint?
And finally, both Nirvana with Drain You, and Bon Jovi with Livin' on a Prayer have appeared on Rock Band games. Both games on which you can create your own character to sing in Jovi and Cobain's voices. Isn't this really the same principle Courtney Love is whining about?
Like I said at the top of this section, a reality check is needed and certain people really should be grateful for the fact that their loved ones were influential enough to warrant being immortalised in this way 15 years after their death, not even Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison or Freddie Mercury have been recreated like this.
This has been the opinion of DJ Villan, and not necessarily the rest of Split Infinity Radio.
