Amongst all of "those" websites, pressure groups and forums full of upset gamers threatening boycotts, there has been some news concerning Valve's upcoming zombie shooter Left 4 Dead 2. And it has all come at once, so here is a breakdown of it all for you to read, just because I'm nice like that. Look after the break to see just what is going on in the world of zombie genocide.
Now first up is the news from Australia, their Office of Film and Literature classification which has lately been taking the puritanical approach to gaming has classified the game as MA, which means as long as you're 15 or over you'll be able to buy the game and join in the zombie genocide fun. Well, almost. The game was previously unclassified due to it's violence and it seems that the MA rated version no longer contains depictions of decapitation, dismemberment, wound details and piles of dead zombies littering the levels.
Valve and EA are keeping their fingers crossed that there will be an unedited version released, but this is pending a review from the OFLC board.
There was good news for the game though as valve released details of the brand-new and shiny competitive multiplayer game type, "Scavenge," at a press event in San Francisco over the weekend. It was announced that this mode will allow for quicker and more frantic gameplay.
The idea behind Scavenge is that the four survivor characters have to collect gas cans from various spots in a confined location (just like the motel in the screenshot) in order to fuel up a generator before a two-minute timer expires. There are 16 cans total and 20 seconds are added to the clock for each one collected.
Four other players, controlling Special Infected simply have to stop the survivors doing this. The two new special infected types, Spitters and jockeys play major roles in this with Spitters setting dropped cans alight and Jockeys jumping on survivors with the intent of steering them away from their goal. The game is played in a best of three rounds style with players switching sides between rounds.
There will be 6 of these scavenge modes in all, each one tying in with the games levels and is due out on November 17th.
