Every year we see the XBOX Dashboard blossom more and more into the beautiful flower it always aspired to be, and this year just like last, brings us another Fall update (codenamed Metro) and with it more pretty shiny things to look at, play with and potentially make our new XBOX experience better than before.

This time, the update will be addressing concerns from XBOX users who wanted to see the service evolve, and to put an end to some of the cumbersome navigation in the current dashboard. As well as this Microsoft Live's senior product manager, Terry Farrell said that "We saw the success of Kinect. 10 million of those sensors had been sold and it kinda was the intersection where we started thinking about having a unified design, whether you had a controller and/or a Kinect. That's kind of where we landed with this." So, Metro essentially promises something for all, whether or not the Minority Report style waving is staying as a control method is unclear, but voice recognition is promised and if you're lucky enough to live in one of the launch territories (The USA, English speaking Canada and the UK) then you'll be able to check it out before the rest of the world.
A huge noticeable change will be the new look interface. Gone will be the stacked, clunky images and navigation of the current dashboard and it will be replaced with the modern, streamlined look that Windows phone users are already familiar with. So expect fresh, clean colours, simple white icons, the sharp pinstripes and friendly looking rounded serif-free fonts.
There are exciting things to come on top of all this including the hotly anticipated Live TV service. I can only speculate as to what exactly that will be or how it will be implemented in different territories. No partners have been announced as yet, but will be closer to the Metro launch date.
One announcement about this is that a remote control priced at $19.99 will be launched for the TV services.
One thing that is looking very nice indeed is the implementation of Microsoft's search engine, Bing. This promises instant access to a variety of content in different areas of Xbox Live. This can be accessed via voice or controller and will allow you to search through whatever ask for with categories and even ratings on the subject. We can expect Netflix, Hulu Plus and Zune compatibility, and even the ability to buy items with your voice via Kinect.
In other news on the new dashboard, a new service called Beacons will allow for some Facebook functionality, this will allow you to select achievements from your gaming sessions and share them on Facebook at will, and with a custom message to go with them. You will have the option to disable this, so you don't have to annoy your friends, unless you really want to.
So, there you have it, a round up of what some of the next dashboard update will bring us. It's been given a “fall-2011” release which is tentative at best, but still it's a little something to whet your appetite for the new XBOX dashboard.
