Microtransactions in Dead Space 3 - not quite what you think they are

There is an article up on Eurogamer.net which has the headline "Dead Space 3 includes micro-transactions for buying better weapons". Understandably there was a bit of head turning.

The image above shows a "Cannot craft, additional resources required" message when trying to craft a safety guard for a pistol. There is also the "downloadable content" option underneath it. This would make you think that you can just buy a crap-ton of materials right off the bat, and essentially "pay to win" to get better guns via crafting - A troubling concern to say the least.

Yara Khoury, associate producer on Dead Space 3 says that all hope is not lost. "You can buy the resources with real money, but scavenger bots can also give you the currency that you can use market place, so you don't have to spend [real world] dollars".

She also goes on to state that even with "overflowing resources" you cannot boost your way to the best weapons at the beginning of the game. "There are a lot of weapon parts that are only available to buy later in the game, so unles you are playing through it again (on new game plus mode) you cannot leap to the top of the weapons backet"

So, while it might be annoying to have people who just dump money into the game to get the best guns right off the bat, there are at least a few stop gaps for having them completely out class you in a multiplayer setting.
