RIFT F2P Coming This Summer!

RIFT F2P

Whelp, its official; Trion Worlds' mulit-dimensional fantasy MMORPG RIFT will be jumping on the F2P bandwagon this coming June the 12th.  Check past the cut for more info about the conversion, and what it will mean for current, past, and future RIFT players.

"No trials.  No tricks.  No traps."

This is the promise that Creative Director Bill Fisher, and Senior Design Director Simon Ffinch promise their players for the upcoming F2P conversion of their flagship title, RIFT. What does this ultimately mean?  Well, there are of course some limitations, just like in every other F2P conversion that's happened over the years.  Allow me to sum-up:

  • New players - those that jump in game after the June 12th conversion deadline - will be limited to only (2) starting character slots and (3) starting bag slots, prior to hitting up the (inevitable) in-game RMT shop for those extra shinies that we all love to hate.

  • Current players that do not choose to renew their subscriptions will be limited to (6) starting character slots and (5) starting bag slots.  Additionally, those that have Storm Legion linked to their accounts will have access to the souls included in that expansion, while "basic" RIFT owners and new player will have to (I'm assuming) unlock them via the cashshop.  If you have more than this, don't fret - Trion has said that everyone will keep what they currently have; its not going to just vanish into the aether.  More details to follow.

  • Subscribers (also known as Patrons) will also gain additional bonuses in experience points, currency, and mount speed for shelling out their cash on a month-to-month basis.

  • REX - No, I'm not talking about the big-bad of the dino world; Trion's version of Crystals, Diamonds, Coins, or whatnot that other games use to represent a digital version of real money, are handled like tokens - receiving them and using them adds credits to the player's wallet, which in turn are used in the store for extras.  REX can be traded and sold between players, especially via the in game auction house, enabling free players (and anyone with the gold in game) to earn credits.

  • Loyalty - Trion will reward those players that help support the game with unlockable gifts that you can enjoy across your account, and can be accrued by buying and spending credits, being a Patron, taking part in community-run events, and more.  All existing account will receive Loyalty bonuses based on the total amount of time you spent subbed to RIFT.

Other than that, if you want to read up some more from the men themselves, I've helpfully included a link to the Producer's Letter.
