SPAAAAAAACE NINJAAAA!! Warframe At A Glance

I was recently turned onto this game by a good friend whilest surfing the interwebz, and I gotta say, I was impressed enough by what I saw I downloaded the client and gave it a whirl.  Don't know what Warframe is?  Read on to find out!!

Warframe is fast-paced, futuristic Third Person Shooter (TPS) with some melee elements mixed in.  Developed by Digital Extremes and currently in a closed beta cycle, you can get yourself a beta key from IGN or IncGamers.

Warframe puts players in the the tabi-shoes of one of the Tenno, an elite cadre of warriors once known throught space as the best of the best, masters of sword and gun, and clad in deadly Warframes that granted them assorted special abilities.  Scattered now to the four corners of the galaxy, the Tenno will shoot, hack, slash, and dismember anyone from the three enemy factions in the game to prove their worth once more.

Players must tackle missions in a variety of locales in the star-system - either solo, with friends or with online pick-up groups - and by doing so will liberate said location and pave the way for use of the in-game quick-travel option - called a Solar Rail - to access other locations in-system as well.  All the while, you'll gain credits and resources, to be used in the crafting or modification of weapons or additional Warframes for your use.  Each Warframe grants the wearer unique powers that are unlocked with XP earned during missions; from invisibility, teleportation or magnet-field manipulation to killing blows that can carry you across the room or disabling whole groups of enemies, the Warframes are potent tools in your arsenal.

Warframe reminds me strongly of Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer - from the graphical quality, to the combat and the use of the powers in-game.  And that's a good thing; Bioware got a lot of things right with ME3MP, the mix of action and escalation, the weapons and characters, etc. etc.  Even on a middling-range machine like mine, it runs good and looks very yummy (though i recommend turning the bloom off, cuz, ouch).  Melee hit-detection can be kinda wonky sometimes, but its not a fatal flaw.  Combat is surprisingly fluid for a beta in my humble opinion; but then, I sometimes forget how far game development has come since I first started beta testing, waaaaay back in the the bronze age of online gaming during the late 1980s.

Digitial Extremes has a solid-looking entry into the third-person shooter/action game with Warframe; it may be in beta, but its a sexy, Space Ninja beta!  So go get your keys and put blade to neck!  I'll see you in game!
