Saints Row 4 at PAX East 2013

Saturday at PAX East, Pixyl and I got a chance to sit in on the media showing for Saints Row 4. They showed us a new trailer which gave us a lovely new, hilarious view into more of the new things that are coming in Saints Row 4. Volition said that they took a hard look at Saints Row 3, and decided on what they wanted to keep for Saints 4. The definitely wanted to keep the over the top feeling, but most importantly, they wanted to keep the fun inside of the game. The crazy ideas they come up with are to help with the over the top feel, but they wouldn't put it in the game if it wasn't fun.
We got a look at exactly how the Dubstep Gun and the Inflato Ray work. When the dubstep gun is activated, everybody breaks out dancing and cars spontaneously seem to acquire hydraulics, bouncing along to the beat. The Inflato Ray does exactly what they showed in the world reveal trailer, the target of the gun has their head blow up like a balloon and eventually explode.
And that's just the beginning.
In Saints Row 4, the leader of the Saints is now President of the United States. And of course, the varying Saints are his cabinet. There are alien invaders called the Zen that kidnap them all, destroying the Saints HQ, and put the Saints in a twisted, dark alternate Stillwater. This is a Matrix-like prison that is intended to break them and make the Saints want to cooperate with the Zen. As usual the Saints have their own plans, and start to rebel against them, looking for a way to escape.
I can hear you thinking, "Yeah, yeah. Story. What cool new things are in the game?"
Well....

- Weapon Customization - You can now trick out your guns just like you tricked out your cars in Saints Row 3. You can add damage, and change the appearance entirely, like turning a rocket launcher into a guitar case, a la Desperado. It functions the same, just looks swankier.
- Mech Mayhem - You can hop into a giant mech suit and wreck the town just like you used to in the tank, only with more robot awesomeness. And miniguns. And rocket launchers. Newly added are levels to these kinds of activities, where you can get bronze, silver and gold levels in it to unlock new upgrades that are only available from doing these activities.
- Loyalty Missions - You can do this new mission type to help up well, loyalty.
- Did I mention the Monster Truck?
- New clothing options from the clothing vendors you loved from Saints Row 3.
- Superpowers. Yes, you can do Matrix-like jumps onto the tops of buildings, glide around, use telekinesis to throw people and cars all over, and freeze things solid. Did I mention the things you freeze shatter into hundreds of pieces when you punch them?
- New co-op only modes, like Death Tag where you each get a super power and duke it out.

"What things are back from Saints Row 3?" Yes, I can read your mind.
- You can import your custom characters from Saints Row 3 into 4. Some of the outfit options might not be in the game, if so the Volition folks said that you will get a generic placeholder instead.
- There are still some story choice points in the game, but they have been toned down from Saints 3. There are also multiple endings like in Saints 3.
- Co-op mode is still there, where two of you can play as in Saints Row 3, and the co-op player can drop in and out at will.
- Strongholds still exist, but in Saints 4 they are called hotspots, where you take back parts of the city from the Zen and make them your own territory.
All in all, after this presentation I am still as pumped as I was from just seeing the trailer they revealed worldwide. It looks like another awesome, fun ride through the world that Volition made. This is pretty much an instant pre-order for me. Saints Row 4 comes out this coming August on the 20th in the US and 23rd in EU territories.
