OK, so today marks the 10th anniversary of the release of Sega's last console, The Dreamcast. For those of you who don't know, The Dreamcast was a revolutionary console, not only was it the first of the 128bit generation, but it was the first console capabale of going online, surfing the internet and was a precursor to the gaming loveliness now known as XBOX Live. The Dreamcast was ill-fated despite a strong line up of games, especially those of the Japanese scrolling shoot-em-up many years after the console was abandoned everywhere else in the world, and still has a small yet thriving homebrew scene. I owned, loved and cherished mine and regret the day I sold it....Oh well.
Anyway, the reason I tell you this is that Sega had all but announced they weren't planning anything special for the occasion, no big party, no disc full of classic Dreamcast games like Sonic Adventure, Headhunter or Crazy Taxi 2. And that saddened me, and I'm sure many gamers across the world, as it seemed the final nail in the coffin of that long gone console had been banged in.Those days of Sega goodness finally dead, that had since been murdered by the newer Sonic games and other attrocities, it's world famous characters all over the Nintendo and Microsoft consoles. The world would never be the same again. Not even one fleeting glimpse of Old School Sega memories, just for old times sake. Nostalgia really was a thing of the past.....
Until now.
Today, on the anniversary of that last great Sega console, Sega cheekily announced that in a move taking it's cues from Nintendo and their recently announced release of a new Mario 2D game that the same was happening for our beloved blue hedgehog. Yes, Sonic is coming and this time in an all new 2D old school style adventure for next year. Yes, that's right! Sonic is coming back and in the style gamers of over a certain age will remember with dewey eyed and sticky trousered googdness, in the way Sonic was meant to be. None of this, werewolf transforming, squeaking Knuckles in an airplane nonesense, just good old fashioned, 2D jumping, spinning, bouncing and ring collecting joyfulness.
The game is codenamed Project Needlemouse and has been announced for 2010. It will be in glorious HD and is certain to make eyes bleed and 30-something gamers very happy indeed. There is a trailer here at Gamespot, check it out, weep tears of joy and please don't be too shy to sing along...”SEEEEEEGAAAA”
