Ars Technica Reported today that Sony has released a statement on Patapon 2, the popular PSP puzzle rhythm game, will be released in a digital format as a test to see how consumers will respond to it in tests of the coming digital gaming front that we'll soon come to face.
Thank you sir, may I have another? Why yes! More after the break.
Sony has confirmed in a statement to Ars Technica with the following:
"We're considering a digital only format for the Patapon 2 release as a one time test case as we continue to explore consumer preferences for digital content," Patrick Seybold, Senior Director of Corporate Communications at SCEA said. "The downloadable game will be available on May 5th at both retail and via the PlayStation Store. We remain focused on providing superior games and entertainment experiences in both the UMD and digital formats and are working closely with our partners to deliver the best PSP line up in our history."
Could this be the boost that the PSP truley needs to ocne again become a competitor in the mainstream handheld market? I suspect it could be. If Sony really wants to compete with the brand spankin Nintendo DSi and its online store and browser functionality.
Right now the PSP sales arent terrible but with all the rumors flying aronud about a new version coming out who would want to buy one right now? The only gaming community that they PSP really seems to attract is modders who twist and turn the functionality from a skittle into an amazing rainbow.
No, I'm not saying go out and void your warranty. Leave it to the pros. What I am saying is that Sony is really taking a step in the right direction with digital downloads for the PSP. It will save on costs and max out profits for not only Sony but the Developers and Publishers as well....and we want whats best for Game Devs because without them, no one will make games.
Here's to you Sony. Kudos. You finally got something right.
