What Happens in Manchester Stays on the Internet

As I write this, I’m returning home from Playstation Access  which was held in Manchester at Hope Mill, I’ve seen things of a wholly epic nature, spent the day with the lovely Stevie SG and of course drank free beer, can’t be a bad day at all can it?

Playstation Access was a smallish, yet intimate and friendly event, there was no unnecessary pomp and circumstance, it was all about people having fun, enjoying their hobby and felt like a real exclusive event due to it’s small size. Although small, the event was impressive, fun and incredibly well presented.

Other than that, the main focus of the event was that  it was all about PS3 and the showcasing of a few upcoming games as well as my first look at Resistance 3 and a lot of FIFA action as a new competitor for the Interactive World Cup was born out of a small tournament.

The first thing I made a beeline for was the Sony’s new piece of technology, the 3D Viewer, I pretty much fell in love with this bit of kit and you’ll be seeing a review of that over the next day or so, this one is really worth watching out for, especially as (in the nature of new technology) prices eventually fall.

But, as I said the main focus of the day was in the games, and that's exactly what you'll find out about right now. First up, I played the new God of War game in full 3D with the traditional glasses set up, as you’d expect, it’s all hack and slash fun, and after seeing this, the 3D Viewer and (last year’s showings of) WoW and Guild Wars 2 in full glorious 3D I’m left slightly disappointed by the blandness of the usual 2D faire that I’m used to.

On top of that, most of my day was taken up with more gaming, which included upcoming PS3 exclusive, Starhawk. Starhawk is a new shooter with what seems to be building elements and large stomping robots. I heard will be going into beta in the coming weeks, and is looking set to be another big franchise for Sony.

The game comes accross as a very spaghetti western influenced scifi romp with a musical score that wouldn’t be out of place in a classic Clint Eastwood movie.

Interestingly, in what seems to be an acknowledgement to race relations concerns in gaming, Sony have made a black protagonist for the game that looks set to be a positive gaming role model that isn’t an existing sports star, and a possible new face and strong character for the Sony brand.

Strong controls, graphical flair and what seems to becoming more of a standard in heavy feeling weaponry are all present here, making this a definite title to watch out for.

As well as Starhawk there was Dark Souls, which proved to be dead hard, Resistance 3 which seemed a lot more interesting than I anticipated, Tekken Hybrid which looked just like a good Tekken game should look, some multiplayer Unchartered action which featured lots of third person gunplay and there were even more games to be played.

Now, when it comes to gaming I like carnage, destruction, violence, mayhem and I like guns. The more guns the better. Shooters are where it’s at for me most of the time, but one game that really grabbed the attention of the big kid in me was the new Ratchet and Clank All 4 One.

Not only did Stevie SG wholly recommend this one, but I do too, yes I know, it’s Ratchet and Clank, but there’s carnage, destruction, violence, mayhem…all the boxes are ticked, but with bright colours, fun characters and of course a little robot for good measure. As this was Stevie’s recommendation, I have to say she is a very wise woman indeed. This may well be next on the list when it comes to PS3 games, and yes I can hear you judging me for it but I don’t care. I’m awesome.

This brings me to the shining glory of the afternoon, Assassin’s Creed Revelations. I got my hands on the multiplayer demo of the game, which essentially is a hybrid of tag and hide and seek, with violence and murder actively encouraged as a reward.

You get assigned a target and a pursuer and have to play cat and mouse while being both the cat and mouse at the same time in essence. And really, there’s nothing quite like running around a historical city as one of a few characters (yes, including the ones we all care about from Assassin’s Creed) leaping around rooftops  or stabbing people as they hide in bales of hay.

This multiplayer alone is making me seriously want this game, even if admittedly I’m not really bothered about the story.

So, all I can say now as I write this on a rather crowded train is that Playstation Access was awesome, the aches and pains I’m suffering as a result are more than worth it, so a big thank you to Stevie SG and everyone else I spoke to and played with, here’s to next time.
